Special Dietary Needs of Mature Americans
New Dietary Recommendations for Mature Adults
The 1989 Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) is the last edition in which the oldest age category is 51 years and above (28). Health professionals now recognize that the nutrient needs of persons ages 51 through 70 years are not necessarily the same as for those over 70 years (14,15).The 1989 RDAs (28) are being replaced with a comprehensive set of reference values called Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for healthy people in the United States and Canada. In 1997, the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine issued DRIs for calcium and related nutrients (14). In 1998, a second report of new recommendations for B vitamins and choline was issued (15). These revised recommendations are part of an ongoing overhaul of the RDAs. The new recommendations for mature adults ages 51 through 70 years and over 70 years are presented in the Table. For other nutrients, the 1989 RDAs currently serve as the recommendations.
