Functional Foods: An Overview
What is the Future of Functional Foods?

Whether or not functional foods will be successful long-term depends on several factors including their effectiveness, safety, and quality, as well as how the benefits of these foods are communicated to consumers (2,3,5,6b,8,13,18,67–70). Our understanding of functional foods and their market potential is in its infancy and little is known about their long-term health benefits.

The future of functional foods depends on their effectiveness in reducing the risk of disease, their safety, their organoleptic quality, and consumers’ confidence in the health benefits of these foods.

It therefore is important for consumers to select a variety of foods from all food groups in moderation (2). Functional foods should be viewed as part of an overall healthful diet and not as ‘‘magic bullets’’ to improve health and reduce risk of disease (3,69,70).
