Creating a Healthy School Environment for Children
Actions to Promote Change

Government agencies and professional nutrition, health, and education organizations are making recommendations and taking actions to create healthier school environments (3,4,23,41,47,61-65). For example, USDA's Team Nutrition program provides training, technical assistance, and materials that can be used by teachers, school foodservice staff, health professionals (e.g., school nurses), and others to encourage children to make healthy eating and physical activity choices in schools (61). USDA, along with16 other organizations, has developed Changing the Scene: Improving the School Nutrition Environment (62). This action kit describes how states, schools, and communities can promote healthy eating throughout the total school environment (62). Included in the kit is a "prescription for change" called "Ten Keys to Promoting Healthy Eating in Schools" that was produced by a partnership of six medical, nutrition, and government groups (63).

Recently, a coalition of more than 30 national education, fitness, nutrition, and health organizations joined forces for a Healthy Schools Summit: Taking Action for Children's Nutrition and Fitness (66). Former Surgeon General David Satcher M.D. served as Chair for the event and First Lady Laura Bush as Honorary Chair. The Summit provided administrators, educators, and health professionals with information, direction, and resources and launched State Teams that will work to promote a healthy school environment.
