3-A-Day of Dairy Campaign
3-A-Day of Dairy Campaign
This new multi-year integrated marketing and education campaign is intended to positively impact public health by encouraging people to consume three servings each day of milk, cheese, and yogurt and by increasing their awareness of dairy's important role in good health. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that Americans consume between 500 and 1,300mg of calcium/day (11). Consuming 3-A-Day of milk, cheese, and yogurt can help Americans meet these calcium recommendations in a cost-effective, food-based way. Consuming 3-A-day + 1 of dairy helps to meet the calcium needs of adolescents aged 9 to18 years and adults 51 years and older.
Not only does 3-A-Day of Dairy communicate the number of servings to consume each day, but it also helps to educate the public about serving sizes for milk (8 ounces or 1 cup), cheese (1-1.5 ounces for most cheeses), and yogurt (8 ounces or 1 cup). Most people do not know correct serving sizes of foods (24).
A 3-A-Day of Dairy for Stronger Bones logo is featured on qualifying packages of dairy products. For a dairy product to display this logo, it must be included in the milk, cheese, and yogurt category, and one serving must provide at least 20% of the Daily Value of calcium on the Nutrition Facts panel. For example, one 8-ounce serving of milk has300mg of calcium, or 30% of the Daily Value for calcium, which qualifies this product for the 3-A-Day logo on the package. Calcium-enriched dairy products must meet the 20% Daily Value for calcium on the label and contain at least10% of the Daily Value before enrichment.
As part of 3-A-Day of Dairy educational efforts, a web site, www.3aday.org, has been launched. This web site includes practical tips (e.g., recipes and snacks including milk, cheese, and yogurt) for moms who are the primary decisionmakers for families' food choices, nutrition information, links to other nutrition sites, questions and answers, and a sign up for the Get 3! e-newsletter. The web site provides information for both health professionals and consumers. The 3-A-Day of Dairy Campaign is being promoted at major grocery chains with consumer advertising, as well as through consumer nutrition education and product publicity programs. To help raise consumer awareness, the week of March 3, 2003 (3-3-03 through 3-9-03), which is during National Nutrition Month, has been declared national "3-A-Day of Dairy Week."
