Closing the gap between actual and optimal diets requires an understanding of the multiple factors influencing eating behaviors. Health professionals can build on this knowledge to develop effective nutrition interventions that promote moderation, appropriate portion size, balance, and dietary adequacy, and emphasize the importance of obtaining nutrients from food and the total diet over time (9,16).
