Dairy Foods' Role in Achieving a Healthy Weight
Conclusion

A positive energy balance is the underlying cause of obesity (15). However, emerging data from epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and experimental animal investigations indicate a beneficial role for dietary calcium in weight management (12-18). Moreover, dairy products seem to exert substantially greater effects than calcium alone. In vitro and experimental animal studies suggest a strong theoretical framework to explain the role that dietary calcium plays in lipolysis and lipogenesis. However, additional research, specifically well-designed population-based clinical trials, is necessary to further describe the effects of calcium/dairy foods on body weight/fat (16). Also, research needs to identify subgroups or conditions in which calcium/dairy foods is most effective; define optimal amounts of dairy foods; identify other nutrients and components in dairy foods that may confer further benefit; and more clearly identify the mechanism(s) involved (16).

Considering the growing epidemic of obesity in the nation (1-5), the low calcium and dairy food intake of many Americans (49,50), and emerging research supporting a beneficial effect of increased calcium, and particularly dairy foods, on body weight/fat (12-19), Americans should be encouraged to consume at least three servings of milk, cheese, or yogurt a day within an appropriate energy level to help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
