THE NEW FOOD GUIDANCE SYSTEM
Volume 76, Number 4 July/August 2005
Introduction

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a long history of providing food guides to the American public to help improve their health and well-being (1-3). The Food Guide Pyramid (4), introduced in 1992 and the current guide until very recently, is described as the most publicly recognized guide in history (1). Yet, despite its familiarity, most Americans fail to eat according to this food guide, which likely has contributed to the decline in the nutritional quality of many Americans’ diets and to the rise in obesity and chronic diseases such as osteoporosis (5-9). Several factors led USDA to develop a new food guidance system, including recognition of the shortcomings of one-size-fits-all dietary advice, the need to help individuals understand and follow recommendations in the Food Guide Pyramid, and advances in nutrition research.

USDA’s new food guidance system, called MyPyramid "Steps to a Healthier You," helps translate for the public the recommendations in the 2005 science-based Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

In April 2005, USDA launched MyPyramid “Steps to a Healthier You,” an updated symbol and interactive food guidance system to help individuals make healthier food and physical activity choices consistent with the recommendations in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans jointly released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and USDA (10). The 2005 Dietary Guidelines provides the most up-to-date advice about diet and physical activity to promote health and reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. The recommendations in the Guidelines serve as the foundation for all federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. MyPyramid, a set of educational tools to help implement the Guidelines, is unique in that it replaces “one size fits all” advice with a customizable eating and exercise plan. This new food guidance system can help Americans personalize their approach to choosing a healthier lifestyle that balances nutrition and exercise.

This Digest briefly reviews the history of USDA food guidance and the process of developing a new food guidance system, describes MyPyramid, and addresses some of the challenges ahead in helping individuals effectively apply MyPyramid recommendations. Additional information about MyPyramid can be obtained by going to the Web site, www.mypyramid.gov.
