Wilma Wooten, MD, MPH
Wilma Wooten, MD, MPH, is a board-certified physician in family medicine and holds a master's degree in public health. Dr. Wooten practiced medicine as a faculty member of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Department of Family and Preventive Medicine for 11 years. Her research interests focused on women's health and included studies to assess the risk factors and prevalence of cardiovascular disease. In March 2001, she assumed the position of Deputy Health Officer of the Office of Public Health, Health and Human Services Agency in the County of San Diego. In this position, she has helped to develop the "Reduce or Eliminate Health Disparities with Information" (REHDI) Project that has brought together more than 70 community partners to develop strategies to address the six health disparity areas identified by the Department of Health Services. Additionally, she is medical director for the Office of AIDS Coordination, Laboratory Services for the Regional Public Health Centers of the County, and Medical Quality Assurance Programs.
Dr. Wooten is President of the local society of the National Medical Association (NMA) and involved on a state, regional and national level in this organization. She is the Sports Medicine consultant for the editorial advisory board of Heart & Soul magazine, medical liaison for the San Diego chapter of the NAACP, and president of the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Arts. Dr. Wooten is very active in the local community, involved in many other civic and medical activities, and also volunteers her time to international medical missions to Africa and the Caribbean.
