Dr. Bob Murray, American Academy of Pediatrics and chair-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on School Health

Dr. Robert MurrayQ: What can I do to make sure my kids are eating healthy at school?

A: It’s important for parents to be involved when schools decide what foods and beverages to serve students. To “get the word out” about offering low-fat or fat-free milk in schools, you can:
  • Contact the school food service director to find out whether low-fat or fat-free milk is included in the school's vending and a la carte lines as part of the school’s wellness policy
  • Work with other parents and PTA members who help in the classroom and the school to find ways to encourage healthier food and beverage choices in schools
  • Check out 3aday.org or NutritionExplorations.com to learn more about school nutrition and how to contribute to your school's wellness policies.
