Calcium Summit II
Keynote Address: Creating Coalitions and Public/Private Partnerships to Tackle the Country's Calcium Deficit
Moderator: Peter S. Murano, Ph.D. Deputy Administrator Special Nutrition Programs Food & Nutrition Services U.S. Department of Agriculture
Recognizing the effectiveness of collaborative efforts, USDA has formed partnerships with other government agencies, as well as private organizations, to combat the calcium crisis. USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) collaborated with eight national food companies and a national parenting magazine to help publicize the Food Guide Pyramid for young children. Likewise, USDA has partnered with various organizations to ensure that Nutrition Assistance programs such as the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs reach their target audience and help participants make healthy food choices.
To deliver healthy eating and physical activity messages in schools, USDA is promoting its Team Nutrition Initiative's "Changing the Scene" kit by collaborating with health organizations such as The American Dietetic Association, the American School Food Service Association, and National Dairy Council (1). The kit deals with changing the school environment, in part, by addressing competitive foods and soda vending.
A memorandum of understanding has been established with the National Bone Health Campaign to support its "Powerful Bones, Powerful Girls" initiative and messages. In addition, a healthy lifestyle initiative for pre-adolescent girls, called "The Power of Choice: A Leader's Guide for After School Nutrition," is being developed through a cooperative agreement between the Food and Nutrition Service and the Food and Drug Administration.
