Diabetes Mellitus & Dairy Food Consumption
Future Research Needs in Diabetes and Dairy Foods
- Develop technology to identify diabetes genotypes. The use of a microarray with candidate genes embedded should permit such identification.
- Examine the nutrient-gene interactions that occur in diabetes with special emphasis on the nutrients contained in dairy foods.
- Once identification is possible determine the appropriate strategy(s) for intervention such that the genotype does not express itself phenotypically.
The above are broad statements. Each of these tasks will require significant investments in time and dollars. Some of the work can be accomplished quickly using appropriate animal models but ultimately the results of animal work will require application to man. With the recent completion of the human genome project, it should be possible to design a microarray for screening purposes. Once this is in hand then feeding trials can be conducted on genetically identical individuals. This will then provide the basis for developing appropriate dietary recommendations that will be both effective and useful.
