3-A-Day of Dairy Battles Calcium Crisis in America

Rosemont, Ill. Feb. 24, 2003 – According to the USDA, 75 percent of Americans are not meeting daily calcium recommendations. To address this health concern, the American Dairy Association/National Dairy Council (NDC) launched 3-A-Day of Dairy for Stronger Bones, a nutrition-based marketing and education program.

“Working with health professional partners as well as the experts comprising the new 3-A-Day of Dairy advisory panel, we hope to curb the calcium crisis and have an overall positive influence on American dietary habits,” said Gregory D. Miller, Ph.D., F.A.C.N., Senior Vice President of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs for NDC. “The multi-year 3-A-Day of Dairy program will remind people to eat from the base of the food pyramid, rather than from the tip – which currently accounts for more than a quarter of the average person’s daily caloric intake.”

3-A-Day of Dairy serves the growing need in today’s marketplace for easy, actionable consumer nutrition information. The program includes nutrition education messages regarding the bone-building and health benefits of dairy foods, as well as elements that will help health professionals teach their patients how to develop better eating habits.

To reinforce these messages at retail, the 3-A-Day of Dairy logo will identify dairy products that are an excellent source of calcium (one serving provides at least 20 percent of the Daily Value) and readily available in fat free and lowfat varieties. 3-A-Day of Dairy communications will also remind consumers of the benefits of moderating their dietary fat intake by choosing fat free and lowfat products.

Because there is a need for education and because the program is consistent with recommendations provided in the Food Guide Pyramid, 3-A-Day of Dairy complements other established nutrition education programs.

Since 1915, the National Dairy Council and America’s dairy farmers have been committed to improving public health through nutrition education, research and communications. This program continues in that proud tradition.
