Ohio
Karen Bakies, R.D., L.D. ADA Mideast
Karen Bakies is the Medical Programs Manager with the Dairy Council Mid East. Karen has more than nine years of experience in front of the camera and with reporters. She has completed numerous print, TV and radio interviews on topics such as weight management, child and adolescent nutrition, school nutrition and nutrition for disease prevention.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and completed a post-graduate internship at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Karen has experience in the areas of clinical practice, community nutrition, nutrition education and academia. She oversees health professional programs for Mid East and acts as a resource for not only health professionals but also consumer leaders, the media and the dairy industry.
Karen is involved in the American, Ohio and Northwest Ohio Dietetic Associations. She is a past president of the Ohio Dietetic Association and is currently a delegate for the Ohio Dietetic Association to the American Dietetic Association. She also has been honored by the Ohio Dietetic Association with the "Recognized Young Dietitian" of the Year Award, "Member Merit Award" and most recently the "Presidents Award." Karen is also involved in Ohio Action for Healthy Kids, a group focused on addressing childhood obesity in Ohio.
As a mother of three, Karen understands the concerns many parents have about how to feed their families healthfully. She can offer many suggestions for busy families on how to provide healthy meals and snacks while juggling busy schedules.
Vanessa Miles, R.D., L.D. ADA Mideast
As a registered dietitian with Dairy Council Mid East, Vanessa Miles is committed to communicating science-based nutrition messages to the public. Vanessa has more than three years of experience in front of the camera and with reporters, conducting numerous print, TV and radio interviews on topics such as weight management, child and adolescent nutrition, school nutrition and nutrition for disease prevention. Vanessa believes strongly in translating nutrition information into easy-to-use tips for all audiences.
She received a B. S. degree in Human Nutrition & Foods, option Exercise Science from Virginia Tech; a B. S. degree in Dietetics from Florida State University; and completed a dietetic internship at Marshall University in Huntington, WV.
Vanessa has gained professional experience in the areas of school food service, community nutrition and nutrition education. At Dairy Council Mid East, she acts as a resource to health professionals, educators, school food service directors, media, consumers and the dairy industry.
Vanessa is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dietetic Association as well as state and local dietetic associations. She is a member of the WV Dietetic Association Board, WV Child Nutrition Center Advisory Board, WV Nutrition and Chronic Disease Coalition, WV Osteoporosis Prevention Education Program Advisory Panel, State Health Education Council, and the WV Family & Nutrition Program Advisory Committee. Vanessa also serves as the liaison for the WV Action for Healthy Kids Team.
Nancy M. Zwick, M.Ed., R.D., L.D. ADA Mideast
Nancy Zwick is a Registered Dietitian with Dairy Council Mid East. Nancy has more than five years of experience in front of the camera and with reporters and has completed numerous print, TV and radio interviews on topics such as weight management, child and adolescent nutrition, school nutrition and nutrition for disease prevention. She also hosts her own monthly cable show called the Healthy Living series. Nancy enjoys sharing healthy and delicious cooking tips and recipes.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Cincinnati and completed a post-graduate internship at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nancy received her Master of Nutrition Education degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Nancy is involved in the American, Ohio, Cincinnati and Dayton Dietetic Associations. She has held various leadership positions with the Ohio and Cincinnati Dietetic Associations. Nancy belongs to the Nutrition Education for the Public and the Weight Management American Dietetic Association Practice Group. Nancy also is member of the Ohio Nutrition Council. She has received the Young Recognized Dietitian of the Year and the ODA Member Merit awards.
As a mother of four, Nancy understands the concerns many parents have about feeding their families healthfully. She can offer many suggestions for busy families on how to provide healthy meals that taste great and develop healthy eating habits for a lifetime.
