Stephanie Smith is a registered dietitian and a spokesperson for the National Dairy Council (NDC). Smith also serves as communications director for Western Dairy Council, where she is responsible for the development and execution of nutrition communications and medical outreach programs in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Smith has been an expert source in more than 150 print and TV interviews on nutrition and health topics such as the DASH diet, obesity and weight management, sports nutrition, the importance of calcium and dairy foods for health, women’s health issues, healthy holiday eating and school nutrition.
Before joining the NDC, Smith taught introductory and sports nutrition classes at Metropolitan State College of Denver. She has also worked with competitive athletes, led weight-management classes and served as a consultant to employee wellness programs. Smith has a Master of Science degree in food science and nutrition and a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition and dietetics from Colorado State University. Throughout her career Smith has been active in the Colorado Dietetic Association, serving as spokesperson for five years and receiving the “Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year” award in 1999. Due to her experience in nutrition education, Smith has the ability to communicate the latest nutrition information to a variety of audiences, including consumers and health professionals. Smith’s goal is to provide the community, health professionals, educators and the media with a balanced view of current nutrition issues grounded in sound scientific information.
In her free time, Smith is an avid triathlete, cyclist and tennis player. She also enjoys hiking and snowshoeing the Colorado Mountains with her husband, Steve and golden retriever, Hannah.
