As If You Needed It: 1 More Reason to Love Cheese

January 02, 2014

Here’s another great reason to love cheese: It’s a perfect addition to almost anyone’s eating plan. Here’s why:

First and foremost, many cheeses are a high quality source of protein, plus cheese contains essential minerals, vitamins and nutrients. It’s also one of the top sources of calcium for Americans.

That said, some folks are hesitant to include cheese in their day to day because they may be concerned about lowering their fat, caloric or sodium intake. If that’s the case, don’t worry – there are many cheeses that work with those preferences.

For example, if you’re working on lowering your fat or calorie intake, look for low-fat, reduced-fat, and fat-free cheeses the next time you’re at the store.

While salt plays an important role in cheese-making, there are some cheeses that are naturally lower in sodium like softer, less-aged cheeses.

Even those who live with lactose intolerance can enjoy cheese. Many aged cheeses like Cheddar and Swiss contain little (if any!) lactose, since most of the lactose is removed when the cheeses are made.
