Science Summary: Dairy & Lactose Intolerance

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommend three daily servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy foods for those 9 years old and older. However, it’s common for those experiencing lactose intolerance (LI) symptoms to fall short of this recommendation or avoid dairy foods altogether.

Low dairy food consumption may negatively impact bone health and increase risk for other adverse health outcomes. Experts agree that nutrient-rich dairy foods are an important part of healthy eating patterns, and there are solutions available to help most people with LI enjoy dairy foods and meet nutrient needs.
