Martha Marino, MA, RDN, CD

Martha Marino is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who works for the Washington State Dairy Council, a non-profit nutrition education agency that promotes dairy products as part of a healthful diet. As the Director of Nutrition and Wellness, she oversees public relations and nutrition education activities with health and culinary professionals. Martha develops nutrition education programs and materials, gives presentations on food and nutrition topics, and coordinates marketing communications efforts.

Martha also writes a monthly newsletter through Washington State University called Energize for Nutrition Educators, which updates nutrition educators with information that they can use with low-income clients. Her award-winning career in nutrition education has spanned more than 40 years, journeying through many food groups and public agencies. She was the first director for the Washington State 5-A-Day Program (now called More Matters), created the first position for a dietitian with the Washington State Beef Commission, taught at the University of Washington and Bellevue College, directed a social marketing campaign for Food Stamp families through WSU Extension, and oversaw the WIC Nutrition Program in Bellingham.

Martha received her MA in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Washington, with a minor in education. She graduated with honors from Oregon State University where she obtained her BS in Foods in Nutrition with minors in journalism and cultural anthropology.

The focus of Martha’s career has been on helping food and nutrition professionals effectively guide consumers to eat more enjoyably and healthfully. She loves to advocate for locally grown foods from the Pacific Northwest, and had already been doing so before the local food movement became popular. She grew up in Southern California working on her family’s ranch which still produces delicious avocados, lemons, and oranges.

Martha has served in leadership positions for Food and Culinary Professionals of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the Washington State Food and Nutrition Council. She is the first dietitian member of Les Dames D’Escoffier Seattle Chapter, an invitation-only professional women’s culinary organization, and served as president and other board roles.
